WELCOME TO STUART MIDDLE SCHOOL
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,Respectfully,
I want to begin the issue of the Raptor Alert by sharing some information with you regarding a new member of our administrative staff. Mrs. Cindy Price has accepted to position of interim Assistant Principal at Stuart Middle School. Mrs. Price comes to us with a plethora of both teaching and administrative experience. Most recently, she was a lead teacher at the Adams County Juvenile Detention Center. She has already jumped in and started working on many issues with our students and staff. We are very excited to welcome Cindy to Stuart. We expect that she will be a tremendous asset to our team!
As the weather begins to warm, I wanted to make you aware of some changes that we've had to make to the student dress code at Stuart. We've begun to see an increase of students wearing shorts, skirts and revealing shirts with a low collar or neck line. Due to this, we've found ourselves having to remind more and more students about what is appropriate to school. The policy that is written in the student handbook allows for shorts that are no higher than five inches above the knee. We've had to spend far too much time trying to determine how long the shorts are and how low they are hanging on a student's leg. We cannot afford to spend valuable instructional time attempting to enforce a policy that is so wide open to interpretation. Hence, this will no longer be our policy at Stuart.
We recently mentioned the change in our daily parent email. Effective March 19, students are only allowed to wear shorts to school that reach their knee. If they choose to wear shorts that are higher than the knee, students must be wearing some type of garment underneath i.e. tights, spandex, etc. that does, in fact, reach the knee. We've also been struggling with our female students wearing shirts that either have a low neck line or are missing a collar. They then wear some type of spaghetti strapped shirt underneath. Spaghetti straps are against the school dress code policy and therefore should not be visible at school. Many times when students are caught wearing these types of items, they ask us if they can put a shirt on or a sweater over the shirt. Up to now, we've allowed them to do that only to find that many of them change back into the same clothing later in the day.
From now on students will be asked to change their clothes if they are dressed inappropriately. That may mean them having to call a parent in order to get replacement clothing. If they are unable to get in contact with a parent, we will provide them with a P.E. uniform to wear for the rest of the day. The P.E. uniform will need to be returned to the main office the next day. We will hold onto the inappropriate clothing until ours is returned. Additionally, the student will be issued a discipline referral for violating the dress code. Please help us by becoming familiar with the school dress code as well as monitoring your students clothing choices. While many of the styles that the students are wearing to school are popular, not all of them are appropriate. Thank you in advance for helping us maintain the academic dress standards at Stuart.
We've recently received information that middle school athletic will continue next year. The $75 participation fee and additional $25 fundraising fee will remain the same. We also expect that all of the current sports offerings will remain for the 2012-2013 school year.
In the past couple of weeks letters were mailed home to any students who currently have outstanding fines or fees. Students who have outstanding fines or fees will not receive any academic award certificates to include honor roll or continuation at the end of this year. Furthermore, they will not be able to attend the sixth grade Outdoor Education or the eighth grade Elitches field trip. As always, any monies paid to Stuart will first be applied to outstanding fines for fees. These letters did not include transportation fees and hence our policies regarding athletic or field trip participation do not include those either. You can view any outstanding fines or fees including transportation through the Parent Portal of Infinite Campus.
In the upcoming weeks we will begin our registration process for next years' seventh and eighth grade students. Please stay tuned for more information. Thanks for your continued support.
